Agroforestry systems – SAFs
The Agroforestry System, the so-called SAF, is the cultivation and use of land that respects the natural cycle of each planted species and does not employ monoculture. The SAF system entails several ecological and economic gains.
Producing within the Agroforestry System means crop variety and a source of income in the same area. RECA entails 1,000 hectares of conscientious plantations, equivalent to over 1,100 soccer fields. We are able to guarantee harvests all year round, while ensuring respect to our origins.
According to the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), it is still a challenge to build public policies that contribute to expanding the scale of SAF experiences, which respect and strengthen the diversity they express. Nevertheless, this never stopped RECA from believing and investing in SAF’s potential.
RECA’s SAFs combine over 40 fruit and timber species, as well as medicinal ones. The daily practices adopted constitute the principles of agroecology – each family has its own compost maker and areas are managed through joint efforts, counting on the contribution of the group members in that managed area.
